Thursday I have my first WIC appointment. What should I expect? How long due you think it will take? Will they give me some checks that day or will it have to be a different day? And do they make you make an appointment every time to get the checks or you can just pick them up? Thanks

It took me 4 hours but it really depends on how efficient your WIC office is. They will usually give you checks the same day and yes, you have an appointment every time you go to get checks. Sometimes you have to attend a nutrition class or breastfeeding class or whatever else.

I think for my 1st it was about an hour, after that about 15 minutes. I had to watch a short movie the very first time. You get your checks on your first visit, if you are approved and then you go every 3 months to get your checks.

My office is really quite efficient, I think. The one I went to in NC with my first, it took 1-2 hours. Here it was almost in-and-out. They'll check your weight and probably take blood to check your iron and other levels. They'll ask you a bunch of questions about what you eat and have you set goals for yourself nutritionally. (They don't give you a hard time or anything, but they may ask how you are doing at a later appointment.) You'll usually get 3 months of checks at a time - they print them out right there. And they'll explain how the WIC works. You'll have to go in to get the next set of checks after three months, and after you have the baby or after 6 months, you have to be "recertified" which means they want pay stubs and blood again. :P

WMMV - each state is different and may change things up a bit. :P

I am in PA and it was about an 2 hours or so. They weighed me and my Daughter. They also tested my iron since it was low when I left the hospital and we got our checks the same day. I had to speak to a nutrisionist and all. Everyother appointment you have to do the same things. You always need an appointment, but on check pick-ups you do not need to bring your child unless they are over or under weight. We get recertified every 6mos, which is a pain.
